What's My Hair Porosity? Take the Free Hair Porosity Quiz

What Is Hair Porosity?

Hair porosity is how easily your hair takes in and holds onto water. Your hair can have low, medium, or high porosity.

Porosity can affect how quickly your hair gets wet, how products feel on your hair, how fast your hair dries, and how well it holds moisture.

Your porosity can also change after things like bleach, color, heat damage, or other damage to the hair.

How Can I Get Accurate Results?

For the most accurate results, take this quiz based on how your hair behaves when it is properly clarified and free from heavy product or mineral buildup. Buildup can coat the hair and make it seem like your porosity is different than it really is.

First, check whether you have hard water in your area. If you do, use a chelating shampoo, such as Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Shampoo, on your next wash day to help remove mineral buildup. You may need to shampoo 2–3 times, following the product directions and stopping if your hair or scalp feels irritated.

If you do not have hard water, use a clarifying shampoo, such as Ouidad Water Works Clarifying Shampoo, instead. Shampoo 2–3 times on your next wash day to thoroughly remove product buildup.

After your hair is clean, pay attention to how it naturally behaves: how quickly it gets wet, how products absorb or sit on the hair, how long it takes to dry, and how it responds to moisture.

Use those observations when answering the quiz questions, rather than how your hair acts after applying products.
